Barton Fields is a nature reserve on the eastern outskirts of Abingdon, yet within easy walking and cycling distance of the town centre. Bordering the Thames, the site consists of a diverse range of habitats including dry grassland, a wildflower meadow, willow carr and wetlands and is home to a diverse range of flora and fauna. The site has been managed by members of the Abingdon Naturalists Society (ANS) since 1999 and was designated as a Jubilee Wildlife Site in 2003.
Abingdon Green Gym work under the direction of the site wardens from the ANS as well as a regular team of volunteers. Tasks are numerous but can include seeding the wildflower meadow, managing overgrown vegetation, building and maintaining wildlife ponds and tree planting.
The meeting point for this site is either at Crabtree Place at the Western end or opposite the Sophos building on Barton Lane at the Eastern end, depending upon the planned work location.
